No. PawsitivID works alongside both. A microchip helps when a shelter or vet scans it, but most strangers don't carry a scanner. The biometric ID covers that gap. For licensing, PawsitivID lets you apply for and renew your city license inside the app where the city participates. Your existing chip and license stay valid. ## Is my pet's photo data secure? Yes. Pet photos and biometric data are stored on encrypted servers and used only to match found pets to registered owners. We don't sell pet data, and we don't share it with third parties for marketing. A biometric ID doesn't depend on a registry staying online for a finder to read it. Add a fresh biometric ID in PawsitivID and you have a working fallback the day a chip registry goes dark. ## Does PawsitivID work for cats? Yes — PawsitivID identifies cats the same way it identifies dogs, using facial geometry, nose print, and coat pattern. Indoor cats are one of the strongest cases for biometric ID because they often don't wear collars and can't be chip-scanned by the average neighbor who finds them.
